What Will You Learn?

  • Active listening is a communication technique where the listener fully concentrates, understands, responds, and remembers what is being said. It involves giving the speaker your full attention, being non-judgmental, and providing feedback to ensure understanding.
  • To be an active listener, one must:
  • Give full attention: Focus on the speaker, avoid distractions, and maintain eye contact.
  • Show interest: Use verbal and nonverbal cues to demonstrate engagement, such as nodding and making affirmative sounds.
  • Provide feedback: Reflect on what the speaker is saying by paraphrasing, summarizing, and asking clarifying questions.
  • Defer judgment: Suspend personal biases and judgments to understand the speaker's perspective without interruption.
  • Respond appropriately: Offer constructive responses that acknowledge the speaker's emotions and validate their experiences.
