What Will You Learn?

  • This online training course on Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is designed to address a critical issue affecting women and girls globally. FGM is a harmful traditional practice that involves the partial or total removal of external female genitalia for non-medical reasons, often resulting in severe physical and psychological consequences for the victims.
  • The course is primarily targeted towards individuals who work in professions or sectors where they may encounter cases of FGM or be in a position to prevent it. This includes but is not limited to:
  • Healthcare Professionals: Doctors, nurses, midwives, and other healthcare workers who may come into contact with women and girls seeking medical assistance related to FGM or who are at risk of undergoing the procedure.
  • Social Workers and Child Protection Officers: Professionals who are responsible for safeguarding children and intervening in cases of child abuse, including FGM.
  • Educators: Teachers, school counselors, and other educational staff who interact with students and may notice signs of FGM or be in a position to educate young people about their rights and the dangers of FGM.
  • Law Enforcement Officers: Police officers and legal professionals who may encounter cases of FGM during their investigations or who need to be aware of the legal framework surrounding FGM.
  • Community Workers and Advocates: Individuals working within communities where FGM is practiced, who can raise awareness, provide support to victims, and advocate for the abandonment of the practice.
  • The course aims to provide comprehensive information and advice on two main aspects:
  • FGM Awareness: This section covers essential knowledge about FGM, including its definition, prevalence, cultural and social factors contributing to its persistence, and the types of FGM procedures. Understanding these aspects is crucial for recognizing signs of potential FGM and raising awareness about the issue.
  • FGM Prevention: This section focuses on strategies for preventing FGM, including how to recognize signs of risk or occurrence, intervene effectively to protect potential victims, and understand the importance of the 4 Rs of child protection: Recognize, Respond, Report, and Record.
  • By completing this training course, participants will be better equipped to fulfill their safeguarding duties, identify individuals at risk of FGM, understand the impact of FGM on victims' physical and mental health, and take appropriate action to prevent harm. Ultimately, the goal is to contribute to the global efforts to eradicate FGM and promote the rights and well-being of women and girls everywhere.
